The MLS visitors couldn’t quite find a go-ahead goal despite racking up 31 shots, few of which troubled Sacramento goalkeeper Danny Vitiello, who also denied Graham Zusi from the spot in the decisive shootout.

Sacramento Republic nearly sent the home crowd into a frenzy in the 62nd minute, when Keko controlled a cross in the penalty area and unleashed a scorching shot on target, only to see it denied by a sprawling save from goalkeeper John Pulskamp. Sporting KC’s best look, meanwhile, came in the 98th minute when Daniel Salloi sent a close-range shot off the crossbar.

Every penalty taker converted their spot-kicks until the fifth round, when Vitiello went to his left to deny Zusi, setting the stage for Rodrigo López to slot home the decisive kick and send Sacramento through.
