John Carlson Obituary (1930 – 2022) – Sacramento, CA
John “Jack” Carlson
July 18, 1930 – July 18, 2022
Sacramento, California – Our father died at his home on his 92nd birthday. His life was filled with joy and family. Born in Los Angeles to Tannis and Eleanor Carlson, raised in Orange County. He was the third of four children. Jack started working early during high school in the printing industry which would become his lifelong career. He joined the Air Force in 1948 during the Korea War era. He was stationed in Alaska, serving with the 15th Reconnaissance Technical Squadron. While enlisted he married and had his first of four children. In 1962 Jack met and fell in love with the love of his life Patricia “Pat” Morris of Ontario, Canada. They married in 1963 and shortly afterwards moved to Sacramento where he began his career with the California State Printing plant as a Linotype Operator. He worked for the state for 23 years up until his retirement. Jack was very active with the local Loyal Order of the Moose organization. He was one of the founders of the Rancho Cordova Moose Lodge No. 2357 which began in 1989. Over the years Jack served several positions of leadership including the only 3-term Governor of the Rancho Cordova Lodge and two terms as Administrator. He received his Fellowship Degree in 1993 and was Past President of the Moose Legion Mighty 190. He was awarded the Moose Legionnaire of the Year Award in 2015-2016. He served on numerous committees over the years to ultimately be awarded the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, which “is a reward to members of the Fellowship Degree for extraordinary service to the Order”, in 2016. Everyone was so proud of him.
He was especially adored by his three children. Throughout life he was committed to making sure his children were taken care of. All three of us could feel his love through his kind words and acts. We always knew he was there for us. Life was tough when he lost his beautiful wife Pat after 43 years of marriage. After 6 years, he met Nittaya “Nikki” Wangen. She brought a new spark to his life. Our entire family loved her. They were married for 6 years before her untimely passing in 2020.
Jack was a kind and loving man who will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, sister, daughter, and two wives’. He leaves his three adult children Gretchen (Greg) Richards of Cool, CA; Alan (Gail) Carlson of Foresthill, CA; Jill Carlson of Carlsbad, 5 grandchildren (Zachary, Brooke, Tannis, Holly Jared), 7 great grandchildren (Aidan, Jonathan, Violet, Gwen, Jack, Jacob, Genevieve), Sister Tannis Sue Carlson of Monrovia, Brother-in-law Terry Morris of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private burial with immediate family will take place at East Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento. A Memorial service will be held at the Rancho Cordova Moose Lodge on August 21 at 3:00 pm Family and friends’ welcome. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Jack’s name to Rancho Cordova Moose Family Center, 10124 Coloma Rd., Rancho Cordova, CA 95670
