Lucas Kontes Obituary (1934 – 2022) – Sacramento, CA

Lucas Michael Kontes
January 13, 1934 – August 28, 2022
Sacramento, California – On Sunday, August 28th, 2022, Lucas Michael Kontes, loving husband, father and grandfather, fell asleep with the Lord at the age of 88. Lucas was born on January 13, 1934 to Michael and Georgia Kontes in the small town of Thisvi, Greece. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Stella; children, Michael (Ragan), Dena (Peter), George (Ourania); grandchildren, Luke, Micah, Styliani, Valentina, Louka and Maria. Lucas immigrated to the US from Greece at 16 to work on his uncle’s mink farm in Idaho. Years later he decided to follow his cousin, Nick Kontes, to Sacramento, CA which would later turn out to be a blessing for him. There he met Demetre Psihopedas who would introduce Lucas to his niece, Stella Psihopedas. After meeting Stella, Lucas knew she would become the love of his life. He would soon pour his heart out to her and say, “I will be a good husband, work hard and we will have a good life in America.” Two weeks later, Lucas and Stella were married in Athens at Panagia Chrysospiliotissa Church. They would honeymoon in Greece for the next six months and then make their way to America. On June 27, 1967, Lucas and Stella had their first child Michael, two years later Dena was born and in 1972, they welcomed their son George. Lucas was an avid bird hunter, an unbelievable gardener and a skilled beekeeper. As a devout Greek Orthodox Christian, Lucas spent many years as a psalti, chanting hymns and scriptures with his remarkable voice at the Annunciation and St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Churches. When he wasn’t chanting at church, he would be singing either “Never on a Sunday” or “Itia Itia” at gatherings. Lucas was humble, hardworking and a friend to all; a man who put God and family before anything else. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Services will be held at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 600 Alhambra Blvd., Sacramento. Trisagion: Thursday, Sept. 8th at 6:30 pm Funeral: Friday, Sept. 9th at 10 am In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Annunciation, St. Katherine or St. Anna Greek Orthodox Churches.
