Doig finishes first as team places second at Fresno State tournament | Sports

After three rounds, Cal State Fullerton men’s golf placed second at the Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State in Kingsburg, California, with an overall score of 25-under-par 827.

Senior Harry Doig was the Titan’s best performer, tying with Long Beach State’s Ian Gilligan for top placement in the individual leaderboards, recording a score of 14-under-par 199.

Long Beach State finished in first place in the team play, scoring 30-under-par 822.

Doig had a good start in the opening round, hitting four birdies, two bogeys and an eagle for a score of 4-under-par. The momentum carried into the second round where he followed up with five birdies and a bogey. The third round was strongest for Doig with six birdies, two bogeys and an eagle to go 6-under-par.

Sophomore Matthew Schafer shot an overall score of 4-under-par 209 to tie for ninth individually.

After going 1-over-par in the first round, Schafer broke out in the following round with four birdies, an eagle and bogey to go 5-under-par, resulting in him jumping 18 spots ahead individually. For the last round, Schafer had three birdies, a bogey and double bogey for an even par score.

Junior Trevor McNary and sophomore Russell Howlett tied for 20th place on the player leaderboard with both having an overall score of 1-under-par 212 score.

Howlett concluded the opening round with five birdies and five bogeys to score an even par. He followed up the second round with four birdies and two bogeys to go 2-under-par. The momentum was lost in the third round as he got two birdies and three bogeys and earned a score of 1-over-par 72.

McNary struggled in the first round with four birdies, two being a double and triple bogey, to go 6-over-par. He bounced back in the following round by going 3-under-par, rising 37 spots individually. His momentum was brought in the third round with getting two bogeys, four birdies, and an eagle and earning a 4-under-par 67 score

Sophomore Howard Yoon tied for 34th with a score of 1-over-par 214. After going 2-under-par in the opening round, Yoon struggled in the second round with two birdies and five bogeys to go 3-over-par, dropping him 28 spots down individually. In the third round, he scored three birdies and three bogeys resulting in an even par.

Junior Garrett Boe rounded out the Titans players by tying for 61st with a 7-over-par 220.

The Titans will play at the Oregon State Invitational in Corvallis, Oregon, on Monday.
