It’s opening weekend for ice rinks in the Sacramento area. Both the downtown Sacramento and Folsom ice rink are up and running for the season. Both ice rinks are surrounded by businesses reaping the benefits of the crowds coming in with cash. Clara Kelly, 6, and her big sister Eleanor, 8, are in Folsom visiting from San Francisco.Clara called ice skating fun.”I’m very good and only fell down three times,” she said. The sisters are visiting their grandmother who lives in Folsom.”I think this is going to be our big day activity,” Eleanor Kelly said.Their grandmother said they like to do outdoor activities and make a day of exploring Folsom by checking out the shops near the ice rink. “There’s the bookstore and there’s that toy store on Sutter Street and then we have pizza for lunch,” said Beth Kelly. The Folsom Ice Rink made some upgrades to bring in more skaters. It changed locations and the rink is now a rectangle shape. “The whole goal of the ice rink is to bring people in. We have the farmer’s market this morning,” said general manager Tyler Pepper. “That brings people and we just want to continue to support local businesses on Sutter Street.” One of those local businesses that look forward to the ice rink visitors is the Therapy Store. Employee Nicole Maliate said people might start their Christmas shopping early once they see the stores. “People bring their kids to that and we have a lot of stuff kids would like,” she said. At the downtown Sacramento ice rink, one family planned a small reunion. “It’s so beautiful. I love the vibe. I love the atmosphere,” said Chris Nita, of Union City. “‘Tis the season, the holidays are here and it’s time for family, food and hanging out with loved ones.”Nita came to Sacramento to meet her 6-month-old nephew Joe Joe. James Kamleshan suggested the ice rink for the meet-up for his new son because it’s located in the heart of downtown. “The restaurants are great. You can’t go wrong,” Kamleshan said. “We’re about to go eat somewhere and grab some drinks, maybe a hot toddy,” Nita said. Both rinks will be open until mid-January.
