City of Fresno leaders are working to raise awareness of human trafficking

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) – Fresno city guides help raise awareness about human trafficking and how to get help.

The City Council issued a proclamation Thursday to mark January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

Centro La Familia provides services to victims of human trafficking who need help and guidance in prosecuting their abusers.

The local nonprofit currently has 64 active cases, but as victims of human trafficking are often afraid to come forward, that number could be higher.

Victims are often brought to the United States with promises of a better life and a job, but once they get there, their documents are taken away, they are threatened and end up living a life of servitude without pay.

Centro La Familia says if you suspect someone is a victim of human trafficking, please call them or call law enforcement.

This nonprofit organization offers programs to help victims of crime, support families and children, and promote health and well-being.
