Fresno, CA (KFSN) – Hispanic Heritage Month ends this week. Fresno State University hosts several other events that provoke many meaningful conversations on topics such as immigration and customs enforcement.
“I am the daughter of an immigrant. I know that there are many students with parents who are also undocumented migrants. It feels like you are living in reality and there is nothing you can do. Users had, ”says Fresno State Coordinator of the Latin System. Programs and Services Deyanire Del Toro.
Students who tie colored ribbons on campus booths like Del Toro are somehow involved with immigration and customs control. Each color has its own meaning.
“Pink knows someone who has been deported. Green means that you have been deported. Orange means that you grew up afraid of your loved ones being deported. “
The list of colors continues and is a perfect example of what students are currently seeing outside of the classroom.
To commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, the university is shedding light on this issue with an event beyond hashtags on Tuesday.
Keynote speaker Dr. Luis Fernando Mathias is passionate and well educated. He passes on his knowledge and enables the students to feel informed for themselves and their families.
“We’re going to examine the abolishICE hash tag. What does that mean? Where did it come from And what steps need to be abolished to coordinate that ICE primarily targets the Latin community? Said Luis Fernando Macias Dr. said.
Students can participate directly or via zoom.
Practically everyone in the community is now invited to take part.
Del Toro hopes this conversation will encourage those who attend to stay tuned and get involved.
“It is urgent, it is something we should discuss and we should be at the forefront of the problems we face every day,” said Del Toro.
