Hurdler Jadyn Marshall ran the fastest time in the nation in the 110m hurdles.
STOCKTON, Calif. — If you’re talking about a dynamic coach, a dedicated group of hard working athletes and a team with plenty of confidence, you might be talking about the St. Mary’s High School track team out of Stockton.
The Rams track team has been nothing short of sensational this year, which is proven by the fact they have 26 athletes who qualified for the section finals. They are coached by Myke Lewis, who has nearly 40 years of coaching experience.
“It’s a testament to our coaches and our athletes,” Lewis said. “Just the fact that they believe and they bought in, and they appreciate one another and they push one another.”
One of the premiere athletes on the squad is hurdler Jadyn Marshall, who posted the fastest time in the nation this year in the 110 meter hurdles. Marshall, who will be taking his talents to University of California, Los Angeles in the fall for football and track, knows other runners will be gunning for him, but he’s not worried about it.
“I feel like people know they’re not even close to me. It’s hard to target someone who you can’t catch,” Marshall said.
Another bright spot on this team is the woman’s 4X100 meter relay team, who is ranked seventh in the state.
“We trust what our coaches have done, we trust our training and trust each other,” said Cameron Fields, a senior on the relay team.
The team feels like they run with a chip on their shoulders.
“People are constantly looking at us, looking down on us,” said sophomore Kendall Clay. “They always want to beat St. Mary’s, but it’s not going to happen because we do this every single meet. The job is not done until we’re on that podium taking first place.”
After sections, the team will compete in the master’s, followed up by state championships. After state competition, Jadyn Marshall plans to compete in the Nike Outdoor Nationals, which features the best runners in the country.
