Valley health guides encourage boosters when the holiday season begins

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) – COVID-19 booster syringes can now go into the arms of all adults after federal officials upgraded permission for the syringes last week.

Healthcare facilities in the Central Valley are ready to roll up the sleeves of adults 18 and older who need their COVID-19 booster vaccinations.

Dr. Erum Kazim, of the Dignity Health Medical Group, said that receiving the booster is even more important for groups at higher risk.

“For example, someone who is 50 years of age or older, or if you are over 18 years old and live in a long-term care facility, then it is more strongly recommended for you,” said Dr. Kazim.

Under the new rules, anyone 18 or older can choose either a Pfizer or Moderna booster six months after their last dose. For anyone who received the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine, the wait was two months.

According to Dr. Kazim allows you to combine boosters and say that they are all effective and provide increased protection.

“If people have specific questions about one type of vaccine versus another, I would encourage them to speak to their doctor and find out and discuss what would be the best option for them,” she said.

Dr. Kaiser Permanente Fresno’s Dee Lacy said it had been two or six months since many people had last taken their vaccine.

“We know that protection has diminished a bit, especially for people over 50,” said Dr. Lacy.

Now that the holiday season begins, both health experts said the booster will provide increased protection if people plan to travel and gather in groups, putting them at risk of catching or spreading the virus.

“The first series of vaccinations and the booster vaccination reduce the risk of getting seriously ill not only for yourself, your friends and family, and especially for those who cannot be vaccinated,” said Dr. Kazim. “For example children under the age of five.”
