HARTFIELD—To “improperly discarded cigarette” was cited as the cause of a fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon.
In all, 10 volunteer fire departments responded to 5989 Stockton-Hartfield Road in the town of Chautauqua.
The fire was reported at about 2:30 pm A fire official arrived and reported heavy flames and requested additions crews to the scene.
Firefighters from Hartfield, Dewittville, Mayville, Chautauqua, Stockton, Brocton, Cassadaga, Ellery Center, Sherman and Portland responded. Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies and county fire investigators also responded.
“Through investigation, it was determined that the fire was caused by an improperly discarded cigarette coming into contact with combustible materials on the back porch,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “There were no occupants home at the time of the fire.”
