After Sacramento’s deadly Capitol Casino shooting, here’s a look at crime trends on 16th Street

Three months after a shooting in Sacramento left a security guard dead, KCRA 3 Investigates is digging into a series of other violent events at the same location. “I probably see a cop drive down my street once a day,” says Josh Feldman, a neighbor who lives off 16th Street in Sacramento. Police calls aren’t uncommon along the stretch of road near Dreher and Basler Streets. Nearby 16th Street has been the site of a string of violence, including a deadly shooting in 2016, another in July 2021 and the deadly shooting of a security guard at Capitol Casino in August. After the most recent shooting, KCRA 3 Investigates requested police records for the address of Capitol Casino. The records reveal more than 600 police calls to the address over the past five years. Of those, at least 165 were for supplementary employment or police providing security. At least 109 were for disturbances, 29 for assaults and 18 for robberies or theft. Sacramento police say they may also use that address as a reference point for incidents outside or around the casino. | MORE | MAP: Here are the shootings in Sacramento and Stockton so far in 2022 Despite hundreds of calls there, neighbors say it’s not necessarily the casino’s clientele causing problems. “We’re obviously right in between Loaves and Fishes and the river,” says neighbor Chris Dunn. “Crime just comes mostly from homeless people.” “I’d say most of the issues are caused at the other end of the street with the homeless encampment,” Feldman said. Neighbors say the casino even gives them a sense of security, on a street where they can use the extra help. “Honestly I kind of feel a little bit safer here because there are constantly guards,” Feldman said. Sacramento police say they haven’t identified any trends concerning this location. We reached out to Capitol Casino for an interview and they didn’t respond.
