BACK TO YOU. BRANDI: THANKS SO MUCH. HAVE YOU BEEN DREAMING OF GETTING YOUR FOOD BUSINESS OFF THE GROUND, BUT JUST DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START? MIKE: IT’S A CONFUSING PROCESS, BUT ONE PROGRAM IS HERE TO HELP. JOINING US NOW IS JACOB SACKS, THE ALCHEMIST KITCHEN PROGRAM MANAGER TO TALK TO US MORE ABOUT THE ALCHEMIST MICROENTERPRISE ACADEMY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. >> YEAH, THANKS FOR HAVING ME. MIKE: TELL US HOW THIS WORKS. >> YEAH, THE ACADEMY IS A 12 WEEK TRAINING COURSE WHERE WE MAKE — WE MEET TWICE A WEEK ON ZOOM AND COVER ALL KINDS OF TOPICS THAT ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO STARTING OR GROWING A FOOD BUSINESS, THINGS LIKE PERMITTING, WHICH PERMITS ARE YOU GOING TO NEED, MARKETING, HOW DO YOU DO THAT, HR, HIRING EMPLOYEES, LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS. ALL KINDS OF IMPORTANT THINGS FOR STARTING YOUR FOOD BUSINESS. WE ALSO WORK ON A BUSINESS PLAN THROUGHOUT THE 12 WEEKS. BRANDI: THAT’S AWESOME. WHO DO YOU FEEL IS BEST FITTED FOR THE PROGRAM? >> ALCHEMIST SISI — CDC IS A NONPROFIT, IT IS FOR PEOPLE FROM LOW INCOME BACKGROUNDS OR OTHER RECENT BEST UNDER RESOURCED COMMUNITIES, ANYONE WHO WANTS TO START A FOOD BUSINESS AND HAS A GREAT IDEA AND EVEN THOSE WHO HAVE STARTED, GOT INTO IT AND BEEN LIKE WHOA, I NEED TO BACK UP AND GET SOME OF MY THINGS IN ORDER. ANYONE WHO WANTS TO START A SUCCESSFUL FOOD BUSINESS, THIS PROGRAM IS FOR THEM. MIKE: THOSE ARE SOME IMPORTANT TOPICS ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING TO START A BUSINESS. WHY DO YOU FEEL LIKE A PROGRAM LIKE THIS WAS MISSING IN THIS INDUSTRY? >> YEAH, BUT FOOD INDUSTRY IS NOTORIOUSLY DIFFICULT. ONE OF THE INDUSTRIES WITH THE HIGHEST RATES OF FAILURE. EVERYONE CAN USE A LITTLE EXTRA HELP AND IT IS STILL CONFUSING, THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT TOPICS AND FOOD HAS ADDED LAYERS OF PERMITS THAT YOU NEED AND ALL KINDS OF CONSIDERATIONS. ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO HELP PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION AND A QUICK ARCH PRINTER — AND EQUIP ENTREPRENEURS WITH RESOURCES IS GOOD. BRANDI: WHAT IS THE LONG-TERM PLAN FOR THE PROGRAM? >> THIS IS THE START OF A LARGER PROGRAM. BUSINESSES WHO GO THROUGH OUR ACADEMY COULD GO ON TO OUR PROGRAM WITH A RECEIVE ONE-ON-ONE TRAINING. WE ALSO HAVE A KITCHEN THEY CAN WORK OUT OF AND THE HOPE IS THAT WE CAN GET BUSINESSES TO GROW AND BECOME FINANCIALLY STABLE AND THAT IT CAN BE A SOURCE OF FINANCIAL STABILITY IN PEOPLE’S LIVES. MIKE: WE WILL GET YOU OUT ON THIS, HOW CAN PEOPLE APPLY AND IS THERE A DEADLINE? >> YES, GO TO OUR WEBSITE, ALCHEMISTCDC.ORG/AMA. WE HAVE FOUR LIFE INFORMATION SESSIONS COMING UP ON ZOOM, THE FIRST IS TONIGHT. THERE’S AN ON-DEMAND SESSION THEY CAN WATCH. THEY MUST ATTEND OR DO AN INFO SESSION TO APPLY BUT IT’S ALL ON THE WEBSITE. THE LAST DAY TO APPLY IS — BRANDI: SOME POINT IN AUGUST, RIGHT? WE DON’T HAVE IT IN FRONT OF US EITHER, BUT THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US. THIS IS A GREAT PROGRAM AND WILL HELP A LOT OF ENTREPRENEURS AND PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GET THEIR FOOT IN THE DOOR AND MAYBE DON’T KNOW HOW. THANKS A LOT.

A Sacramento-based nonprofit organization, Alchemist Community Development Corporation, has created a program intended to help aspiring food business owners get their businesses off the ground. Alchemist kitchen program manager Jacob Stacks spoke with KCRA 3 to provide details on the information and resources available through the Alchemist Microenterprise Academy. Stacks said that the academy is a 12-week Zoom training course that covers subjects such as marketing, human resources, hiring employees and how to secure a business permit. “This program is geared towards entrepreneurs from either low-income backgrounds or under-resourced communities,” Stacks said. “But really anyone who wants to start a food business, or maybe even those who’ve started and need to get things in order.” Stacks added that a program like this is essential because the food industry is hard to navigate and has one of the highest rates of failure. The plan is for Alchemist Microenterprise Academy to be a stepping stone for other Alchemist programs such as their incubator program and kitchen program. “The hope is that we can get businesses to grow and become financially stable,” Stacks said. The deadline to apply for the academy is Aug. 21 and the fee is $300 per business. Additional information can be found here.
