Arrest made after 15-year-old shot while sleeping in her bed

On Wednesday, a Modesto teenager who was shot in her back over the weekend while in her bedroom forgave the accused shooter. She returned home from the hospital days later. “I got shot and how it all happened is just crazy,” said Aurora, who didn’t wish to share her last name.Aurora said she was getting ready for bed on Saturday and had just turned on a show to watch before going to sleep when she heard a loud noise. She thought it was some kind of explosion.”I touched and I was bleeding and I couldn’t breathe. It was hard for me to breathe,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it.” Aurora said she is feeling much better but is experiencing some soreness from the shot.”I can walk. I can talk. I can move,” she said. “I got a second shot at life. I’m grateful for that.” The shooting happened Saturday on the 900 block of Inez Drive. Police said 22-year-old Giovanni Omar Gutierrez-Garcia was handling a gun in the garage of a home that is to the north of the teen’s home when the gun was discharged. The bullet then went through the wall of the girl’s home and struck her in the back, police said. Aurora said her doctors told her the bullet landed inches from her spine. Gutierrez-Garcia turned himself into Tuesday afternoon, police said. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on charges of possession of an assault weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm and inflicting great bodily injury in the commission of a felony.”I don’t really blame him,” Aurora said. “I heard it was an accident. I mean, accidents happen. I’m glad he took responsibility for it.” Gutierrez-Garcia remained in custody Wednesday on $125,000 bail.
