Douglas Fuller Obituary (1934 – 2022) – Sacramento, CA
Douglas Warren Fuller
August 19, 1934 – July 17, 2022
Sacramento, California –
Born in Stockton, Ca. Douglas lived throughout the west coast as the son of a master heavy machinery mechanic. His parents, Orville and Helen moved as the work evolved every couple of years. At times he would also live with his grandparents, Frank and June Donegan. He had many great stories of those days with his siblings, Richard, Sharon and Prudence. After graduating from High School in Kennewick, Wa., he joined the military. His background in electronics and ability to read schematics got him assigned to munitions testing in Killeen, Texas. Once honorably discharged from the Army, he used the GI bill to advance his education. Doug started classes at both the Northwestern Seminary and Southern Oregon College in Ashland, Or. There he met his soon-to-be wife of almost 60 years, Julia May.
Married in 1958, they had four kids by April of 1964. Doug studied and worked through those years, finally attaining his masters in Organizational Sociology from the University of Oregon. After a brief teaching stint at Oregon State, the family settled in Sacramento, Ca. He found work with the state at what is now called the Employment Development Department. He served many roles in his 30 plus year career. Starting with reports and surveys, graduating to grant writing and organizational reviews of field offices up and down the state. After many years he transitioned into computer security and finally disaster recovery for the agency.
Through the years he helped to raise his children, Edmund, Eric, James and Christine holding such auspicious positions as little league equipment manager and community pool custodian among others. He had seemingly boundless energy and was always there to help others. In addition, he was deeply committed to his faith and explored many paths as he grew up. He and Julie chose the Disciples of Christ and joined Arden Christian Church soon after arriving in Sacramento. He assumed every possible role in the church over the years, teaching, preaching, serving on the board and anything else that came along.
After Doug and Julie retired, they traveled with gusto and toured through countless countries, logging their adventures in scrapbooks that would eventually fill a closet. They loved traveling with friends and also caravanned with others, towing their trailer throughout the States. They were also avid jazz fans and volunteered for the Jubilee for over 30 years. They were active members of their dance club and senior gleaners and Doug spent countless hours volunteering for and guiding railroading clubs.
He was friend to all who knew him and was singled out far and wide by his signature booming laughter and quick smile. He will be missed by all. For all who are interested, a memorial/celebration will be held at Arden Christian Church, 4300 Las Cruces way, Sacramento. Saturday, October 15th, 2pm with a social hour to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug’s name to Arden Christian Church at the above address or to the Placerville Sacramento Valley Railroad at 705 Sibley Street, Folsom California, 95630.
