Explosion rocks Sacramento neighborhood near Z’berg Park

PARK, OFF FREEPORT BOULEVARD, IN SOUTH LAKE PARK. THAT’S WHERE WE FIND KCRA 3’S LEE ANNE DEYER WITH THE LATEST. SOUNDS LIKE THIS ONE GOT THE ATTENTION OF A LOT OF PEOPLE. LEE ANNE: EVERY PERSON THAT WE TALKED TO WHO LIVES IN THIS AREA TOLD US THEY HAVE EITHER HEARD ABOUT THE EXPLOSION OR HEARD IT THEMSELVES. SOME TOLD US IT SHOOK THEIR HOMES, OTHERS SAID THEY JUST HEARD A LOUD BANG. THE EXPLOSION WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO MISS FOR PEOPLE IN THE AREA. LEE ANNE: POLICE SAY NOBODY WAS HURT BUT THAT A TREE WAS DAMAGED. >> IT WAS REAL LOUD. I WAS RIGHT HERE. I RUSHED TO THE WINDOW AND I JUST HEARD PEOPLE LAUGHING. LEE ANNE: THIS HAPPEND AT ZBERG PARK THURSDAY EVENING. >> IT CONFUSED ME AND SCARED ME. LEE ANNE: POLICE SAID THEY RESPONDED TO THE PARK AROUND 7:00 ON THURSDAY NIGHT FOR REPORTS OF THIS EXPLOSION. AFTER SOME INVESTIGATION, THEY WERE ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT A SMALL DEVICE WAS SET OFF NEAR A TREE. THE EXPLOSION PROMPTING A LOT OF QUESTIONS AND CONFUSION IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD FRIDAY. DETECTIVES WITH THE DEPARTMENT’S EXPLOSIVES ORDINANCE UNIT ARE INVESTIGATING. THAT INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING AND POLICE SAY THEY’RE STILL LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO COME FORWARD WITH INFORMATION. >> IT WAS REALLY JARRING. THAT’S ALL I CAN REALLY SAY. Explosion rocks Sacramento neighborhood, police say ‘small device’ detonated at Z’berg Park

For people who live near Sacramento’s Z’berg Park, a Thursday night explosion was nearly impossible to miss.”All of a sudden, we just heard this loud bang. It kind of started all of us,” said William Brannigan, who heard the explosion and lives nearby. According to the Sacramento Police Department, nobody was hurt but a tree was damaged after a “small device” was set off near a tree. “I just heard this real loud, big explosion,” said Jourdan Major, who also heard it. Ten-year-old Tommy Price said he was playing with a friend when he, too, heard the explosion. He told KCRA 3’s Lee Anne Denyer he worried it was a gunshot.”It confused me and it kind of scared me,” Price said.Police said they’re investigating, and that detectives with Explosive Ordnance Unit were called out to the scene Thursday night. They’re still hoping for tips to come in, the department said.Police said they detained two people located nearby Thursday, and that one was arrested. Police said, however, the arrest — of Darren Arias, 46 — was made for an outstanding felony warrant and that no arrests were made related to the explosion. No one as of Friday night has been arrested in connection with the explosion.
