No. 13 Baker Wildcats Begin 2022 Season With 26-14 Win Over No. 22 Culver-Stockton

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Starting the 2022 season off on a high note, the No. 13 Baker football team defeated No. 22 Culver-Stockton on Saturday by a score of 26-14.

Cole Fisher led the Wildcats with 26 carries on Saturday for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while Sam Heggemann went 11-for-16 through the air for 115 yards. His top target was Tyjuan Lewis who had four catches for 67 yards.

Mitchell Henry led the team on defense with 11 tackles, while Canon Karn followed closely behind with nine. Marcus Johnson had two sacks on the day that played huge for the Baker Wildcats.

Neither team could score for most of the first quarter, but after a muffed punt by Culver-Stockton, Baker ran just two plays as Cole Fisher scored his first touchdown as a Wildcat to give Baker a 7-0 lead with 1:51 left in the first quarter.

Baker then couldn’t score on their next two possessions, but with 36 seconds left in the first half, a 26-yard field goal by Sam Vossen gave the Wildcats a 10-0 lead heading into halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Culver-Stockton went 74 yards in 11 plays to score and cut the lead to 10-7, but after two punts from Baker, a sack by Marcus Johnson in the endzone was scored a safety and extended the Baker lead to 12-7 with 1:40 left in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats were able to add to their lead as Heggemann ran it in from six yards out and Baker led, 19-7 with 11:24 left in the game. Baker then added to their lead with 2:33 left after a strip sack by Marcus Johnson gave Baker the ball at the one and then the very next play, Fisher punched it in, giving Baker a 26-7 lead with 2:33 remaining.

Culver-Stockton was able to score once more before the end of the game, but it was not enough as Baker defeated Culver-Stockton, 26-14.

Baker is now 1-0 on the season. They will be in action again next weekend when they travel to Oskaloosa, Iowa to take on William Penn at 6 pm
