Pilot killed in small plane crash near Modesto Airport, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office says

A man died after a small plane crashed in a field near the Modesto Airport on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office. This happened just after 1 pm in a field east of the airport beside the northbound lanes of Mitchell Road. Multiple emergency crews rushed on site trying to piece together what had happened. A white plane appeared to have gone down head-on into an area with trees. Multiple parts of the plane had snapped.The pilot was the only occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.By evening, most emergency vehicles had cleared the scene, but law enforcement remains there as they await additional resources for a full investigation . The crash site remains taped off. Sheriff’s office officials told KCRA 3 they are working to confirm the identity of the pilot and determine where he was coming from.Northbound lanes of Mitchell Road between Hatch and Finch roads will be partially closed throughout the night until the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board arrive to investigate.
