Questions remain after Stockton shoots that left woman dead

The day after a deadly shooting in a Stockton neighborhood, residents who spoke with KCRA 3 expressed their fatigue with violence.The Stockton Police Department announced that it arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with shooting two women and killing one of them. It happened near Albany and Astor drives. Investigators believe the 16-year-old and another gunman who accompanied him tried to rob the women, each ages 18 and 20, after he and another unidentified male met up with them. Police said that is when the two alleged gunmen shot at both women, killing the 20-year-old.A resident who lives just down the street from where the shooting happened wanted to remain anonymous, but she said the act of violence was uncomfortably close to home.”Just knowing that that happened just literally right there, it’s pretty scary,” the woman said. “The youth violence in Stockton, it’s pretty scary. I mean, like I said, everyone just needs to be a little more cautious and just be safe.”The organization called Advance Peace Stockton said it is working to make that happen. Nuri Muhammad, the program manager for Advance Peace Stockton, said they work with a wide range of young people, from those in their mid-teens to those in their 30s, with the goal of eliminating gun violence in urban communities.Muhammad said it all starts with connecting with those most at risk.”Some people like to put the blame on them, that they are the cause. But really, they are the effect,” Muhammad said. “Once we do the outreach, we make sure they have intense case management, try to set them up with some type of a cognitive behavioral therapist, we make sure they engage in some life skills classes, make sure they’re connected to mentors, “Muhammad said. Community leaders and officials admit there is still a lot of work to do to curb violence overall in Stockton. Stockton police said that through July 20, there have been 30 homicides in the city so far in 2022. There were 23 homicides through the same point last year.In terms of the Tuesday night shooting, Stockton police said the 18-year-old woman who was shot at was not injured, and authorities have questioned her about what happened.Investigators also said the 16-year- old was injured, but it is still unclear if he shot himself on accident while trying to run away, or if the other suspect gunmen shot him while opening fire on the women.Stockton police said they are still searching for the second suspected gunman, but they don’t have a description to share as of Wednesday night, only that the suspect is male.
