Stormy weekend weather forced the cancellation of various planned holiday events across the greater Sacramento area.

Some festivities were canceled altogether, while an event in Elk Grove decided to change the format of its celebration.

Rain meant the annual Parade of Lights couldn’t happen, but the city brought the magic of the Holiday Illumination Festival indoors.

“We’re not going to let the rain dampen our holiday spirit,” said Elk Grove community events coordinator, Jodie Moreno. “We kind of… pivoted, and brought everything we could inside so we could make sure we put on a fun holiday event for our community.”

Smiles with Santa, picture-worthy moments inside an inflatable snow globe, and merriment-making with roaming entertainers like Matty the Giant Elf and Frosty the Snowman happened inside The Center at District56, Elk Grove’s community events center.

“I’m sure we’ve experienced a little bit of a downtick in attendance,” Moreno said. “But that’s OK. The people that are here are having a wonderful experience!”

The wet weather also forced the cancellation of Saturday night’s holiday tree lighting in Stockton. The city said the event will be rescheduled for a future date and that the community would be informed as soon as a new date for the tree lighting was set.
