BRANDI: THE 29-YEAR-OLD HAS SIGNIFICANT TIES TO SACRAMENTO. HE WAS RAISED IN THE CITY AND STILL HAS FAMILY HERE. NICHOLS WAS PULLED OVER BY MEMPHIS POLICE. PROSECUTORS SAY THE VIDEO SHOWS OFFICERS SAVAGELY BEATING NICHOLS FOR THREE MINUTES. ALL THE OFFICERS WERE FIRED LAST WEEK. YESTERDAY, ALL FIVE WERE ARRESTED AND FACE CHARGES THAT INCLUDE SECOND DEGREE MURDER. INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE THEY HAVE CLEAR EVIDENCE THAT THE ACTIONS BY THE OFFICERS WERE CRIMINAL. HE WAS RAISED IN SACRAMENTO, AND THE FAMILY ALONG WITH ATTORNEYS WERE SHOWN BODY CAMERA FOOTAGE ON MONDAY AHEAD OF THE PUBLIC RELEASE TODAY. IT WAS SEVERAL WEEKS AGO ON JANUARY 7. NICHOLS WAS PULLED OVER BY MEMPHIS POLICE. IT WAS ORIGINALLY REPORTED FOR RECKLESS DRIVING. THREE DAYS LATER, HE DIED AFTER A CONFRONTATION DURING THE POLICE STOP AND PUT THEM IN THE HOSPITAL AND FIVE OFFICERS WERE FIRED FURTHER INVOLVEMENT. THEY WERE DETERMINED TO HAVE VIOLATED POLICIES INCLUDING EXCESSIVE FORCE, AND TO RENDER AID. THE OFFICERS NOW ARE CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE OFFENSES, INCLUDING AGGRAVATED NAPPING, CAUSING INJURY, ASSAULT, OPPRESSION, AND SECOND-DEGREE MURDER. THEY’VE ALSO BEEN RELIEVED OF DUTY PENDING INVESTIGATION. AT 230 IN THE AFTERNOON, THE NAACP WILL HOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE IN SACRAMENTO CITY HALL. THAT IS AHEAD OF THE 4:00.
