Sacramento PD detective who hit, killed 2 men in I-5 crash named

The Sacramento police detective who officials say hit and killed two men in a freeway crash earlier this week was identified Thursday as Jonathan Thomas Nangle.The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened Tuesday around 6 am on southbound Interstate 5 near Sutterville Road. Nangle was on duty in an unmarked Ford Fusion that hit the two others as a result of an “unknown reason.” Officials said a pickup truck had pulled over to the side of the road and possibly ran out of gas, when another vehicle pulled over to help. As two people were working on putting gas inside the vehicle, the detective crossed the solid white line and hit them both, officials said.One of them died at the scene. The other died at the hospital, CHP said.The Sacramento County Coroner’s office identified the two as 33-year-old Juan Carlos Enriquez Rodriguez of Sacramento and 32-year-old Lionel Enriquez Rodriguez of Simi Valley.RELATED | Family mourns two brothers killed in I-5 crash where Sacramento detective crashed into themNangle was not injured in the crash. KCRA 3 has asked the Sacramento Police Department how long Nangle has worked in the department, but we have not yet heard back. This is the second deadly crash involving a Sacramento police officer. On Oct. 31, an officer slammed into a motorcyclist at Bell Ave. and May St. The department said the officer was on their way to a felony call but did not have the emergency lights and sirens activated. Denzil Broadhurst, 61, died. In response to the two crashes, Sacramento police responded with this statement.”As a department, any incident involving our officers that results in serious injury or death is thoroughly reviewed at multiple levels. Specific to vehicle collisions, an accident review committee routinely reviews the facts of officers involved in collisions for policy violations, training, and safety issues. We recognize the tragic nature of these types of incidents and the impact they have on the parties involved as well as the community. We remain committed to fully cooperate with this investigation as it moves forward.”
