Sacramento State welcomes new head football coach Andy Thompson
The Sacramento State Hornets officially introduced Andy Thompson as the 12th head coach in program history on Thursday afternoon. “In Andy Thompson, we have a leader and someone who can lead this team to a national championship,” campus president Robert Nelsen said. Thompson moves from defensive coordinator to head coach with his 20 years of coaching experience. “It’s kind of surreal, and I’m very humbled,” said Thompson. This past season, Thompson’s defense played a large role in Sacramento State’s historic 12-1 season, recording stops on potential game-winning or tying drives in the final two minutes in four games.”First and foremost, he’s a good person and does the right thing and will recruit the right athletes to Sac State,” Director of Athletics Mark Orr said. Along with Thompson, the Hornets are also retaining most of the coaching staff including Assistant Head Coach Kris Richardson and newly promoted Bobby Fresques as the offensive coordinator. “I couldn’t be happier, and I feel like I’m in the perfect situation. They hired the perfect head coach, and I’m excited to keep this going,” Richardson said. “Man, I’m so happy for Andy. He has such incredible experience on the defensive side and that’s nice for Kris and I. But I will look for his guidance and leadership,” Fresques said. Thompson wouldn’t have it any other way. “You are only as good as the coaches and players you surround yourself with, I’m honored they want to work with me,” Thompson said.The announcement comes after the Hornets concluded a wildly successful 12-1 season that is nearly unheard of in its program history.The coach who led the team, Troy Taylor, accepted a head coaching gig at Stanford.
