Suspected DUI driver identified in Sacramento County crash that killed woman

A 35-year-old Sacramento woman was killed and a 4-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition after they were struck by a suspected DUI driver Thursday morning in Sacramento County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Friday identified the mother killed as 35-year-old Veronica Vargas.The crash happened at Power Inn Road and Elsie Avenue just after 8:30 am, officials said.A man, later identified as 32-year- old Kryn Michael Spear, was driving a white 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck was reportedly driving fast and swerving in and out of traffic, CHP said. Spear then ran a red light and struck a silver 2014 Ford Explorer with the Vargas and the young girl inside, CHP said. The 4-year-old girl was taken to the hospital in serious condition. The Ford SUV overturned and the Chevrolet ended up in a ditch. CHP said Spear from Elk Grove, tried to walk away but was detained by people at the scene. He was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on multiple felony charges, including driving under the influence, hit-and-run, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving with a suspended driver’s license. Prior to the crash, CHP said they received multiple reports of a driver in a white truck speeding, running red lights and making unsafe lane changes. Spear is scheduled to be in court on Tuesday. His bail is set at $310,000, according to jail records. The crash remains under investigation by the South Sacramento CHP Area office.
