Two people are facing hate-crime charges for targeting Asian women in a string of Sacramento robberies, the Sacramento Police Department said Wednesday.
Latravion Mccockran, 20, of Sacramento and a 17-year-old juvenile suspect from Berkeley targeted Asian women leaving shopping centers along the Stockton Boulevard Corridor, police said. During robberies in May and June the suspects stole thousands in jewlery, cash and other personal property, police said.
The Sacramento County district attorney’s office charged each of them with robbery with a hate crime enhancement after evidence determined the victims were targeted due to their race, police said.
Mccockran and the juvenile assaulted multiple victims during the robberies, according to police, and in at least one incident a victim reported that one of the suspects was armed with a handgun.
The juvenile suspect was arrested June 15 in Berkeley, where two individuals with him at the time were found to be illegally possessing handguns, police said. Both were arrested along with the juvenile suspect. Mccockran was arrested in Sacramento on June 22. Both Mccockran and the juvenile remained in custody as of Wednesday, police said.
The investigation into the robberies remains open. Sacramento police said that people with tips on the incidents may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
