Tyler Carr, son of David Carr, is committed to Fresno State
The Fresno State Bulldogs will have a third member of the Carr family on the football roster soon, according to a report. Tyler Carr, the son of legendary Fresno State QB David Carr, is committed to walk-on to the football team next season.
The news was first reported by KMJ 580 morning sports anchor George Takata. He tweeted on Monday, “Bakersfield College TE Tyler Carr will walk on at Fresno State next season, per source. Tyler is the son of Bulldogs legendary QB David Carr. Tyler will be the 3rd member of the Carr family to wear a (Fresno State football) uniform, along with his dad and uncle, Derek.”
Carr family members shared the news on social media shortly after.
Tyler Carr played this season at Bakersfield College as a freshman tight end. He is listed on the roster at 6-foot-2 and 208 lbs. Carr was recorded with four games played and one catch for 11 yards, according to BC team statistics. The Renegades’ season ended Saturday with a 4-6 record.
As a junior in high school, Carr caught 18 passes for 266 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2019. His senior season was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He played at Bakersfield Christian High School where his uncle Darren Carr is the head coach and father David Carr is the offensive coordinator.
Fresno State currently carries seven tight ends on the roster. Of them, three are listed as seniors, although only one is completely out of eligibility after his year – starter Raymond Pauwels.
David Carr helped lead the Bulldogs to its greatest national recognition in program history as Pat Hill’s 2001 team climbed all the way to No. 8 in the top 25 rankings. As a senior, Carr passed for 4,839 yards and 46 touchdowns. The Bulldogs opened that 2001 season with wins at Colorado, vs Oregon State and at Wisconsin. The team finished 11-3.
Carr finished no. Voted 5 in the Heisman Trophy and received 34 winning votes. He also won the Johnny Unitas Award. Carr was picked no. 1 overall in the 2002 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans as an expansion team. He started there for six seasons and had an 11-year NFL career with stops at the Carolina Panthers, New York Giants (twice) and San Francisco 49ers. Carr won a Super Bowl ring in 2011 with the Giants as the back-up QB to Eli Manning.
In 2007, David Carr’s jersey was retired at Fresno State. In 2017, his younger brother Derek Carr (Tyler’s uncle) also had his jersey retired at Fresno State for an illustrious Bulldog quarterback career as well. the no 8 and no. 4 jersey numbers and Carr names are listed side-by-side on the press box of Valley Children’s Stadium.
Tyler Carr joins a 2023 recruiting class that has six other commitments, all with 3-Star rankings. Another famous Fresno State name is in the class with 3-Star running back Devon Rivers, the son of Ron Rivers and younger brother of Ronnie Rivers. The Bulldogs also have local commitments from San Joaquin Memorial athlete Brandon Ramirez, Buchanan quarterback Jayden Mandal and central cornerback Imari Conley. Concord (Calif.) De La Salle running back Charles Greer and Palmdale (Calif.) Highland defensive lineman Mordecai Hines round out the class so far.
