Police and fire crews went to the scene.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews from York and Acomb responded to a report of a two vehicle road traffic collision in which a car collided with a parked vehicle.

“On the arrival of crews, two occupants of the car were out of the vehicle.

“Crews made the car safe and carried out initial checks on the two occupants. One casualty suffering air bag injuries and breathing difficulties was given oxygen therapy before being transported to hospital for precautionary checks and treatment.”

According to the resident, the woman hurt in the accident was elderly. They were dismayed that an ambulance didn’t come – and the fire service took her to hospital instead.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they were called at 2.17pm to reports of a road traffic collision on Stockton Lane.

“We later received a call from the police to cancel the ambulance,” they said.

York Mix asked when police canceled the ambulance, but we haven’t yet received a reply.

The reader told York Mix: “First to arrive was one fire engine, then another, followed by a police van.

“The poor old lady in the red car looked in agony – the air bags had gone off.

“It was the fire officers who provided medical aid with oxygen, and the insulated wrap in cold pouring rain.”

He said a fire marshal who arrived at 3.15pm helped the casualty into their car to take her to the hospital.

He told us: “I am an OAP and if this is what we can expect in the future, god help us all.

“Fire officers did a sterling job.”
