History

Center Valley, PA (November 16, 2022) – The DeSales University men’s basketball team fell just short in its upset bid of ninth ranked Stockton University falling in OT to the Ospreys, 73-70, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening the 2022 -23 season home opener at Billera Hall.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Stockton – 73, DeSales – 70 (OT)
  • records: DeSales (2-1 overall); Stockton (3-0 overall)
  • This was the seventh career meeting and moved the Ospreys to 6-1 in the all-time series.

How it happened

  • An early 6-0 run from the Bulldogs gave the hosts a 15-9 lead before Stockton rebounded with a 20-5 spurt of its own to take a 29-20 lead with 6:43 left in the opening half.
  • DeSales countered with an 11-1 run to take a 31-30 lead before Stockton scored the final six points of the half to take a 39-34 lead at the break.
  • The Bulldogs wasted no time reclaiming a lead going on an 8-1 run out of the halftime gates to lead 42-41.
  • It was back and forth the rest of the way as neither team led by more than four points over the final 18 minutes of this game.
  • Stockton led 64-61 with 2:30 left when senior Jordan Holmqvist tied the game with a three from the left wing at the 2:08 mark.
  • The Ospreys had a chance to take the lead the free throw line with 1:16 to go but missed the front end but DeSales returned the favor missing two freebies with 54 seconds left as the game remained tied.
  • After a Stockton miss and a DeSales turnover, SU’s DJ Campbell was racing down the court for what seemed like a go ahead lay-up with less than 30 seconds left before junior Elijah Eberly had an incredible chase down block giving DSU possession with 20.7 seconds left and the score still tied at 64.
  • After two Bulldog timeouts, junior Mason Barnes dribbled around the top of the key till the clock got under 10 seconds, but lost his footing and turned the ball over as a 3/4 court heave from the Ospreys was well short sending the game into overtime.
  • Stockton led by three early until a three from the right corner by junior Christian Guldin tied the game at 69 with 2:43 left.
  • After an offensive foul on Stockton, Barnes drew a foul on the other end and hit 1-of-2 free throws to give DSU a 70-69 lead with 2:08 left.
  • A foul on the ensuing possession saw Kylon Flanders make both ends of his free throw attempts flipping the score to 71-70 in favor of Stockton.
  • Both teams had multiple looks at either taking the lead of extending its lead that were off the mark and DeSales had possession with 36 seconds left down one.
  • Eberly was fouled out of the timeout but missed both free throws and Tayvon Gaither was fouled after the rebound and calmly hit both free throws for his only points of the game to give SU a 73-70 lead.
  • An offensive foul on a screen gave Stockton the ball back with 15 seconds left but Campbell missed both free throws and DeSales still had life.
  • DSU dribbled up the court and had multiple handoffs on the right wing that led to a desperation three from Eberly as the horn sounded that caromed off the backboard and the side of the rim as Stockton escaped with the win.
