What to know before this weekend’s games

It’s another California League clash as the Stockton Ports welcome the Modesto Nuts to town for game four of their six-game series at Banner Island Ballpark on Friday. The Nuts have taken the first three contests and are riding a five-game win streak, while Stockton is riding an eight-game slide. Modesto has no problem putting the ball in play, though they will be missing two of their top players this season. Nuts shortstop Edwin Arroyo, who leads the league in hits with 51 on the season, was traded to the Reds. Their first baseman, Robert Perez Jr., has been at an RBI machine with a league-leading 87 on the year. He was called up to Class A. Harry Ford, Mariners minor league position player of the month for July, has been red-hot as of late. The 19-year-old has hit 4 home runs and had eight steals in the last 34 games. Keep in mind, the average A-ball athlete is just over 21 years old. The Ports will try to calm down the nuts at the plate with 21-year-old Carlos Guarate, who they just acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in a swap of minor-league players. Guarate has spent the season in A-ball in Palm Beach, posting a 4.18 ERA while logging 75 1/3 innings. Modesto currently sits on top of the second half standings in the California League North with a 21-12 record and a four-game lead over Fresno and San Jose. Stockon sits in last place at 8-25.The series will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
