When high temps will fade in Sacramento

For the second day in a row, temperatures are within record territory throughout NorCal. Downtown Sacramento just missed the 100-degree mark on Tuesday, but the forecast calls for slightly hotter conditions Wednesday afternoon. The afternoon’s high is expected to reach 102 in Sacramento. The record for the date is 100 set back in 1951 and then tied in 2020. High temperatures will range from 98 to 102 throughout the Central Valley. Even the Sierra is feeling the heat with highs expected to reach the low 80 this afternoon in South Lake Tahoe. The record there is 83 degrees set in 1986. On average, the first 100-degree day for Sacramento hits in the first week of June although it’s not uncommon to have a day reach that mark in May. The city averages 22 100-degree days in a year.This early week heat comes as a strong ridge of high pressure sits right over the region, keeping the sky clear and the winds light.Starting Wednesday night though, that ridge of high pressure will start to slide to the east. That will set up a Delta breeze weather pattern which will produce notably cooler weather starting Thursday.Tonight the temperature will drop to near 60 degrees with light winds for the Valley. Thursday will see highs in the upper 80s in the Valley and low 70s in the Sierra. There will be a noticeable breeze throughout the region. Expect gusts to 20 mph in the Valley and up to 35 mph in the Sierra. The forecast calls for highs in the low to mid-80s Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the Valley. That’s close to average for the end of May. Each day will feature a light southwest breeze. Clouds will be a little more widespread with the chance for some isolated showers and storms in the foothills. The highest chance for any rain would come Sunday into Monday but even that looks minimal at this point. Sunday will also feature some rain showers and early morning snow showers in the Sierra. Snow levels will stay above 6500 feet. Afternoon highs will be in the mid-50s.Memorial Day looks mild with temperatures in the mid-80s for the valley. In the Sierra, expect cooler conditions with the chance for some rain and wet snow showers in the highest elevations. Temperatures around Lake Tahoe will only reach the low 50s on Monday.
