A Sacramento County code enforcement officer alerted and helped four children and their grandmother evacuate from their burning home Wednesday, authorities said.”This is not normally what I do, but everything aside, I just felt like I needed to rush in and provide assistance, ” said Gennadiy Marmuenko, a code enforcement officer. Marmuenko said he regularly works in the area and was making a turn to head to his next appointment when he saw smoke coming from the house at 8401 Stevenson Ave. He said probation officers working in the area also rushed over to help. “We looked at the house and we see fire coming, shooting through the roof. We hear voices inside the house and we also observed kids standing in the doorway in shock,” Marmuenko said. The fire momentarily threatened the adjacent unoccupied home, but flames only scarred the outside wall of the home, Metro Fire said.Marmuenko was there when the homeowner, John Xiong, arrived, he said.”They’re safe, so that’s good,” Xiong said. “I don’t know what to do. I’m trying to clean up and trying to see if I can find anything valuable – It’s too much.” Xiong said three of his children are set to start school at Union House Elementary School next week. He said the family needs to get clothes and shoes before they do.”The neighbors are supportive. They’re helping us,” said Xiong. “Everyone is safe, so that’s the positive part of this.”A spokesperson for Sac Metro Fire said investigators determined the fire was started by a faulty electrical wire connected to the family’s chicken coop. The Red Cross is helping seven people who have been displaced by the fire.
