Sacramento mayor says city is increasing security for holiday season

MIKE: CITY SAFETY AND HOMELESSNESS TOP OF FIND — MIND FOR THOSE WHO LIVE IN SACRAMENTO. HERE TO DISCUSS THOSE TOPICS AND MORE IS MAYOR DARRELL STEINBERG. THANKS FOR BEING WITH US. >> GOOD TO BE WITH YOU. MIKE: IT’S THE HOLIDAY SEASON, A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR TOURISM AND LOCAL SpendING, HOW IS THE CITY PREPARING TO HANDLE A BUSY TIME OF YEAR? >> I WAS DOWNTOWN LAST N FORIGHT THE KINGS GAME, SIX IN A ROW BY THE WAY, I’M HOPEFUL AND HAPPY BUT WHAT WHAT WAS GREAT IS YELLOW PEOPLE DOWNTOWN. THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE RESTAURANTS, BEFORE THE GAME AT AFTER THE GAME, WE HAVE OUR CHALLENGES AND NEVER DENY THEM. BUT IT IS IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE ITS ARGUMENT TO IS COMING THROUGH A VERY DIFFICULT TIME WITH A LOT OF STRENGTH, A LOT OF RESILIENCE AND A LOT OF HOPE AND YOU SEE IT. DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO AND MIDTOWN AND REALLY THROUGHOUT THE CITY. WE PREPARE BY HAVING AS MANY AMENITIES AS WE CAN, DOWNTOWN, THROUGHOUT THE CITY, WELCOMING PEOPLE AT OF COURSE WORKING TO MAKE SURE THE DOWNTOWN IS SAFE AT THE SAME TOWN — TIME. MIKE: LET’S STAY ON THE SECURITY, IN LIGHT OF THE DEADLY SHOOTING AT A LGBTQ NIGHT CLUB IN COLORADO IS THERE ANY SECURITY MEASURES THE CITY MAY MAKE TO EASE ANY FEAR WITHIN THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY? >> FIRST OF ALL TO OUR LGBTQ COMMUNITY, WE ARE WITH YOU, WE ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU. WE WILL NEVER LET THE HATERS WIN. AND WHAT HAPPENED IN COLORADO WAS JUST A PORTENT — ABHORENT NAND SICKENING. WE HAVE A NIGHTCLUB MANAGER IN CHARGE OF THE ENTIRE DOWNTOWN NIGHTCLUB SCENE AND WE ARE ENHANCING SECURITY, WE WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL SAFE. MIKE: THERE WAS A HEATED CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST WEEK REGARDING A SAFE STAY SITE OFF ARDEN AND COLFAX STREETS. CONCERNS A PLANNED SWEEP WOULD DISPLACE A LOT OF FOLKS OUT THERE. WHAT IS THE LATEST ON THE CITY? >> WE ARE TRYING TO WORK WITH THE COMMUNITY AND THE HOMELESS ADVOCATES. TO TRY AND FIND A SOLUTION. THE REAL SOLUTION IS TO CREATE MORE SHELTER, MORE HOUSING, MORE MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED THEM AND TO BRING PEOPLE INSIDE. I WOULD JUST SAY THIS. I KNOW PEOPLE ARE ANXIOUS ABOUT THE HIS.VE ANY PLANS TO CONTINUE — ABOUT THIS. THE CITY AND COUNTY HAVE ALMOST COMPLETED — TO BE MUCH MORE ASSERTIVE IN THESE TENT ENCAMPMENTS TO ENSURE THAT NOT ONLY THEY SAFETY — SAFER AND DON’T EXIST IN LARGE NUMBERS, MOSTLY TO DIAGNOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS ON THE STREET AND HELP GET PEOPLE OFF THE STREET. THAT IS ULTIMATELY THE SOLUTION. BEGINNING OF DECEMBER THERE ARE GOING TO BE IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS ABOUT THE CITY AND COUNTY ENHANCING THEIR PARTNERSHIP LIKE NEVER BEFORE. MIKE: EARLIER THIS MONTH GOVERNOR NEWSOME REJECTED CITIES PROPOSED PLANS TO ADDRESS HOMELESSNESS, SAYING HE WANTED ALL LAWMAKERS ON THE SAME PAGE BEFORE DISTRIBUTING STATE FUNDS. THOSE REVISED PROPOSALS ARE DUE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS. WHAT HAS SACRAMENTO DONE TO MEET HIS REQUIREMENTS? >> WE ARE REVISING OUR PROPOSAL. THERE WAS SOME MISUNDERSTANDING OR REALLY INACCURACY IN TERMS OF THE REPORTING. WE SEEK AT LEAST A 15% REDUCTION. OUR REPORT WILL SHOW THAT AND WE’RE GOING TO FIGHT WITH SACRAMENTO TO MAKE THIS BETTER. MIKE: LET’S CLARIFY THE RECENTLY PASSED MEASURE N, IT’S NOT A NEW TAX BUT IT DOES MAKE COLLECTED HOTEL TAXES MORE FLEXIBLE. IS THERE A SPECIFIC PROJECT ON THE HORIZON THE CITY WILL FOCUS ON? >> THIS IS THE SLEEPER INITIATIVE, VERY LITTLE ATTENTION AND THE VOTERS SAID YES WITH 70%. WE WILL HAVE OVER $100 MILLION OF BONDING FUNDING. IT’S WE ARE GOING TO REINVEST IN REMAKING THE OLD SACRAMENTO WATERFRONT AND BUILDING A ICONIC REGIONAL USE SPORTS FACILITY IN MEADOWVIEW THAT IS GOING TO ATTRACT DATE — STATE AND NATIONAL FUNDING OF ALL KIND. TWO ADDITIONAL PROJECTS IN ADDITION TO BUILD MORE. AN EXCITING PROPOSITION THAT WILL ALLOW US TO DEVELOP MORE TOURISM. MIKE
